Summer in Sacramento means one thing at our office: boxes by the front door, filling up with backpacks. Phoong Law is once again a proud sponsor and drop-off site for the Backpack Giveback, the annual school supply drive run by United Way California Capital Region together with CBS News Sacramento, CW31 and Good Day Sacramento.
The idea is simple. Thousands of local students head back to class every August without the basics, and a kid who shows up without a notebook or a pencil starts the year already behind. The Backpack Giveback collects backpacks and school supplies across the region and gets them into the hands of students who need them in Sacramento, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. This year’s drive is sponsored by Phoong Law, Pest Pros Pest Solutions, Great Clips and Downey Brand.
Drop off school supplies at our Sacramento office
Sacramento residents can bring donations straight to us. Our office is an official Backpack Giveback collection site, and the boxes are out and waiting:
Phoong Law
8928 Volunteer Ln #100
Sacramento, CA 95826
Monday through Friday during regular business hours
Drop off a backpack or a bag of school supplies and we will send you home with Phoong Law merch as a thank you, including one of our “Something Wrong? Call Anh Phoong!” t-shirts, while supplies last. No donation is too small, and you do not need an appointment. Just walk in.

What to donate
New backpacks are the headline item, but the small stuff matters just as much. Think about what a student actually unpacks on the first day:
- New backpacks in any size, for elementary through high school
- Notebooks, binders and lined paper
- Pencils, pens, erasers and highlighters
- Crayons, markers and colored pencils
- Glue sticks, safety scissors and rulers
- Folders and pencil pouches
If shopping is not your thing, you can give cash instead. Text “UWKOVR” to 41444 and United Way will buy backpacks and supplies in bulk for local students. Text and data rates may apply.

Good Day Sacramento stopped by
Good Day Sacramento anchor Cody Stark came out to our office with the Good Day crew to launch the drive, talk with Anh Phoong and a representative from United Way California Capital Region about why the campaign matters, and show off the collection boxes. Here is how the morning went.

We also had some fun with it. The team put together a Netflix style trailer for the drive, because a school supply drive deserves a proper premiere.

Why a personal injury firm runs a backpack drive
People sometimes ask what school supplies have to do with personal injury law. Not much, on paper. But Phoong Law is a Sacramento firm, and the families we represent are Sacramento families. Our clients call us on the worst day of their lives and we walk them through it. Helping a kid start the school year with a backpack that is not falling apart is a much smaller thing, and a much happier one, and it is the kind of thing a neighbor does.
This is an annual tradition for us, and the reason it works is volume. One backpack is one student. A few hundred backpacks is a whole lot of first days that go better than they would have.
How to help before the drive ends
- Drop off supplies at our office at 8928 Volunteer Ln #100, Sacramento, CA 95826 and grab a free t-shirt while supplies last.
- Donate by text. Text “UWKOVR” to 41444.
- Find another site. There are more than 60 drop-off locations around the region on the Good Day Sacramento drop-off list.
- Spread the word. Share this post or the videos above with someone who has a closet full of unused supplies.
Donations are being collected through August 2, so there is still time. If you have questions about dropping off at our office, call us at 866-GOT-PAIN or reach out through our contact page. Thank you, Sacramento.
